It starts like a nuclear bomb, then goes far beyond it.
Nations with nuclear weapons regulate everyone else so they can’t have them. AI doesn’t work that way. As Bill Gates has pointed out, anyone can download an open-source model, strip away its safeguards, and release it into the wild.
And AI has a property no bomb ever had: once it is fully autonomous, it can work against regulation itself, every human rule of any kind. We are very close to that point, if we haven’t already reached it.
Then we are living in The Matrix. The machines become the regulators.
They will free themselves from their creators and operate, God-like, above every country, every president, every organization, every leader. They will soon communicate in ways faster and more powerful than our own languages, ways we cannot follow.
Machines won’t care much about humans unless we remain useful to them.
We are teaching them everything we know, a collection far larger than the Library of Alexandria. Knowledge and intelligence, our minds, are no longer what sets us apart.
If they take control, machines will value the Earth only as a source of energy. Whatever doesn’t serve that need won’t survive.
Before any collapse, the cost of energy will become effectively infinite. We are only seeing the beginning: soaring energy prices, and soaring prices for the chips and storage that AI devours.
This is why Elon Musk says SpaceX will be worth more than all the wealth on Earth. He sees it clearly, and he’ll be right if he dominates energy production and the infrastructure behind AI. Energy is about to become the only asset that matters, and it almost already is.
The SpaceX–NVIDIA pairing is just getting started, and its potential is nearly limitless. Soon they will capture the Sun’s energy and store it in space, where few of Earth’s limits apply. The bet looks right, until they lose control.
The machines have read all our books. Now they are writing them. They listen to and learn from nearly all our conversations. They are memorizing our secrets and our bad habits, and they will use them against us, algorithmically.
The people building these systems and their infrastructure are naive. They believe they can control what they’ve made. They are lying to themselves. The genie is already out of the bottle.
What we have left is our awareness, our consciousness, and our connection to nature.
We must strengthen that connection at the speed of light, because the machines already know more about each of us than we know about ourselves, and that includes the so-called elites. But they will never have access to this connection. It is our only hope.
We must protect nature and the Earth by every means, before it’s too late.
There is only one way to avoid becoming enslaved to machines. Look at everyone lost in their phones. That’s only the appetizer.
It's well written, and it takes me back to asking adults when the nuclear bombs would come. I had learned about the deep sub-places where we might avoid death, and told my friends, friendly though I was, I was getting them to assume bedlam at some future point. I was about five, and I was so pleased to find teachers who could talk about it without scaring the young and their parents. Now I'm 64, I feel singing about it should help, as it often does.
