Yes, excellent article. I regret that the Internet version, however, did not publish the 10 tips. Good luck to you.

Funny to see a newspaper clipping scanned in on a blog! FTW!

great, great, great (from a much-scarred iterative founder). 10 for 10.

I have this idea for a web business that would find a loyal and statistically growing niche market of users. (Nothing to do with animation, the topic of my blog.) The thing is, it's very stealable by a pharmaceutical company. Your advice cuts against my suspicions, especially the idea of an open discussion network. It seems the equivalent of leaving my car running when I visit a store -- I almost deserve to get it stolen. And no insurance company would give me money if I reported it.

I do know that I need to get people who know more about aspects of the business than I do. That's everybody, especially since I've never started a business before. I guess that this is how you say it's done: blog my brains out, market the idea before the product actually exists, and get input even as I keep the front door ajar to the concept. Except, it sounds crazy!

It also sounds a lot easier for a millionaire such as you to do, who can afford to fail.

Hi Loïc!
I (fortunately and unfortunately) completely agree with your vision and insight... As the cofounder of Blogdimension.com, the Web 2.0 Search Engine, I find it very difficult to develop a new concept and the related business here in Europe. If you come from the bottom you will have no support in the media, no ear from the BA's or VC's. Only the users can do something for you if you bring and share the true value with them.

Europe should wake up, and quickly!

All the Best Loïc for your nice adventure there or anywhere ;-)

About

Welcome to my blog. Based in San Francisco, I am an entrepreneur and a blogger. I just started my fifth startup, Seesmic, a community driven video social software. Here is what TechCrunch says about it.

I am blogging every day a video on loic.tv about (almost) everything I do as I start Seesmic, I also constantly post short thoughts to twitter and often my pictures on Flickr.

I also organize every year in Paris the conference LeWeb3 that gathers more than a thousand bloggers and entrepreneurs from 40 countries on Dec 11 and 12.

If you would like to learn more, here is a bio, my LinkedIn profile, my wikipedia pages in english and french. Sometimes they are subject to changes that do not always reflect what I consider the truth but that is the principle.

You may also want to subscribe to my RSS feeds in English, French or my video podcast feed.
