#424 Web 2.0 Travel: Trivop

Great, free-swinging interview, thank you. My two eurocents: I really like the trivop effort, and I like as well the tough questions you pose.

I sense that we are at a crossroads now with rich media and with user-generated content, and we will soon see what direction these will take. Video is fast changing and commercializing in several directions, and we are just at the nodal point of the rise of verticals like Thomas Owadenko's startup. Ok, trivop is a vertical in a still horizontal world--the YouTubes and DailyMotions could become powerful competitors. They could, that is, in theory. But they won't be able to compete well against scores of new verticles that will certainly emerge. Ok, I'll condition it: I /hope/ that they won't because we want the web to be safe for talented entreprenuers and cool startups, don't we?

Re your legitimate questions about whether hotels will contribute to a site where they are also, potentially, criticized or even flamed. Yes, I believe they will have to. I think signs point to the travel industry getting what's going on with the web. The fact is that hotel properties will be critiqued widely now whether they like it or not. From the industry's point of view, it may be better to be in there aggressively with one's own sales pitch, then not to challenge at all. (Lots of hard knocks on hotels on Expedia, for example.).

Bigger point: I think UGC is here to stay in ecommerce generally, certainly in travel where travelers feel pretty vulnerable away from home. We will see whether the big players, hotel chains in this case, try to put the UGC genie back in the bottle. But I don't think they can anymore.
