France loses six seats in the World Economic Forum rating

France loses 6 seats (fr) at the World Economic Forum global competitiveness ranking. The World Economic Forum explains this years' ranking in videoo. Disclosure: I participated to 5 Davos Forums, my notes and podcasts are archived, and I also think globalization is generally good, which does not always make me popular in France.

The theme of my French business course last semester was la mondialisation.... I read one article where, upon a survey, 98% of French respondants had negative responses to globalization. That's when I fell upon your site, and was very surprised to hear another perspective!

Isn't it ironic, though, that while France is generally "against" globalization, it nevertheless relies so much on it for its economy? The concept of everything French - wine, Evian, cheese, has actually become more competitive on the global market precisely because of the culture attached to it.

I think, finally, that it's just a fear of losing cultural aspects and facing a sort of "Americanization" that scares people. Which is understandable.

Quote from GQ Magazine:

"If we have any food in 200 years that doesn't resemble Velveeta cheese, it will be thanks to a French man".

And that, even if paradoxal, is a good thing. :)

and why are you supporting people like Sarkozy or Darcos who made that our country lost 6 seats in World Economic Forum?

What is the significance of France losing these 6 seats? The World Economic Forum is a conference and doesn't register on most people's radar screens. Why do they hold it in Davos, where the media cannot be accommodated in large numbers? If anything major was going on, or if any important decisions were being made that would have an impact on the global market, they wouldn't hold this forum at Davos. It is interesting in terms of ideas and the connections that happen there but the real economic decisions are made elsewhere. So don't worry too much about France losing seats.

The attitudes towards globalisation in France are interesting. 8 times out of 10 I get on an airplane in the USA, it is an Airbus (and these are american airlines we're talking about). We use french products here every single day and respect their high quality. This is something you can be very proud of in France.

There is approximately 30 billion dollars of annual trade between France and the United States alone - with the trade surplus on the french side (lucky you!). France depends on the world economy as does every other country with a functioning market place.

Romain - I'm sorry, but you can't blame Sarkozy for this. And attacking Loic for his political position is unfair, not to mention off-topic here. Attack the ideas, but never the man.

Something we shall not forget. We are living in an anglo-saxon world. And compared to any other countries, France is certainly among the least populated developped countries. And yet, thanks to a glorious history which didn't have to face globalization, France is still attractive.
Therefore, i don't think we have to really care about who is ranked first or last. Economics doesn't make a country valuable. It's a mix so many things that at the end. Well, we should just live our own lives without always checking if the grass is always greener on the other side.

PS: "six seats" ??? ouch, i have to review my poor english. I thought we were saying "place" and not "seat" when talking about ranking

Aguolo> "Seat" is correct in this instance. When speaking about the United Nations, for example, the word is "seat". Place would also be acceptable, but not as correct.

I don't agree that we are living in an anglo-saxon world. By the way, the anglo-saxons haven't existed in almost a thousand years. Why does this term persist in France? :-)

And your glorious history was founded on globalization, my friend. In North America, Africa, and Asia. France has not been living in a vacuum.

Please explain how economics does not make a country valuable? I'm dying to hear your theory on this.

As for the business world, we clearly live in anglo-saxon world in that in business, things are clearly just in english. Be in China, in the Middle East or in America, we are not communicating anymore in french. I do think this is a great advantage to be able to do business with its native language in a world where the money the most used (but for how long) is still the dollar.

As for what you call globalization, I call this exploitation. Today, countries were dealing with each others. Before, powerful countries like the Old Europe or America later on, were exploiting other countries. That's not what the same kind of globalization.

Finally, as for what makes a country valuable. It's maybe just my opinion, but money doesn't make everything and the health of its economy doesn't create its happiness. Anyway, on that kind of subject, each and everyone got it's own opinion. I'm not here for convincing anybody but for giving my own view.

The correct word is "anglophone" or "english speaking" not "anglo-saxon". Understand the difference. This designation of "anglo-saxon" is used incorrectly in such a general way in France. Given the varied ethnic origins of english speaking people, in Great Britain, North America, and other countries where english is the first language, it is inappropriate to say "Anglo-Saxon".

While english might be widely spoken in the business world - this is a question of linguistics, not culture. We need a common language to communicate with our business partners. Would you prefer to learn mandarin? :-)

This exploitation that you speak about does indeed occur but it is not the only means to the economic end in the world economy - the system is not entirely based on exploitation. There is a lot of compensation that occurs in the process. Is the exchange always fair? No.

There's another word for it - development.

A healthy economy is the key to improving the standard of living for people and allowing them the luxury of being able to think about their happiness as opposed to where their next meal is going to come from.

I was not clear, that "exploitation" I suggest was about that form of globalization you mentioned when talking about France's history. If today, I have no problem with globalization, I don't consider it's the same globalization than before which was then based more on exploiting than really havin fair relations with each other.
As for the anglosaxon thing, i must agree with you, my use of it is a bit too old-fashioned. Anyway, you understood my point which is that in a english-speaking world, everything is always easier when you're a native.
As for development, i think western countries have reached a point where they are all developped the same. If we can stress cultural differences, it gets harder and harder to see real differences in the life style. So does having a greater GDP makes you more valuable than another ? Certainly, but economically speaking only.
I'm a bit tired of all these rankings only based on how friendly to business a country can be. this is not making one's country's value.

I am not entirely convinced of the validity of their methodology. One big indicator to me is that assess a country you must know it... and in the case of the region I cover, North Africa, WEF has zero presence there. How to do go from not knowing the student at all to ranking him? That beats me.

Israel ranked 15th most competitive country in The World Economic Forum report

The World Economic Forum published its yearly 2006-2007 report in which it ranks Israel as one of the world’s most competitive economies, ahead of Canada, France and the Republic of Korea.

Technological readiness saw the greatest improvement which leaped 20 places to rank 3rd in the world, while market efficiency increased by 7 places. Israel ranked 1st for availability of scientists and engineers an improvement of 3 places from the previous year and 2nd for venture capital availability. Israel ranked 7th in the world for innovation.

Additional improvements were in macroeconomic management, market efficiency and various areas of infrastructure. Due to the large improvement in its overall ranking, Israel received a highlighted section in the report.

Chief Economist and director of the Global Competitiveness Network, Augusto Lopex-Claros, wrote in the report: "Israel has become a world technology powerhouse, and this is beginning to have favorable demonstration effect on the rest of the economy . . . Israel has benefited from the development of culture of innovation, supported by first-class institutions of higher education and scientific research ".
