Hey Robert, good luck and good to hear that you think there is something happening in Europe too. The real question is if Robert will manage to get as sexy as Rocketboom and Mobuzz girls...

France's mysterious embrace of blogs

Thomas Crampton tries to understand in International Herald Tribune why blogs are so mainstream in France:

"Already famed for angry labor strikes and philosophical debates in smoke-filled cafés, the French have now brought these passions online to become some of the world's most intensive bloggers. The French distinguish themselves, both statistically and anecdotally, ahead of Germans, Britons and even Americans in their obsession with blogs, the personal and public journals of the Internet age. Just why the French have embraced blogs more than most is anyone's guess, but explanations range from technical to historical and cultural."
Thanks Thomas for quoting me.

A good essay by Paul Graham that even exists in French.

Liars !

Bloghome
A new survey on bloggers by Pew Internet is just out (and interesting). It also contains a big lie: 83% of bloggers surveyed say they do it from home I don't buy it a second even though I understand why everybody lies ! The highest audience on my blog is also every monday morning...

 Wordpress Wp-Images 2006 07 Fired(2)
Catherine alias Petite anglaise, 33 ans, secretary and blogger, just got fired for blogging in Paris, the first ever employee in France who gets this treatment. Catherine sues her old fashioned boss to the French prudhomme and I bet she will win. Goog luck Catherine !

UnConferences: A Waste of Time and Money?

source: Business Blog Consulting UnConferences: A Waste of Time and Money?.

"The "UnConference" is all the rage right now... an agenda-free gathering of like minded souls who seek to learn from each other's wisdom... an "expert free zone"... no sponsors... no official speakers or panels."

and as expected, it does not work !

11 suggestions for not being a Dot-Bomb 2.0

The hot captcha

The hotcaptcha, based on the hotornot API. You know these tests to decrease spam. Now you can choose the top 3 babes (or men) you like most to pass the test rather than a stupid graphic. Easy to install on your own blog, I'll think about it for mine ;-)

Israel-Lebanon conflict: different point of views

Bombardement
My very good friend Ouriel, in Tel Aviv, explains:

"All the world seems to behave as if Israel started those operations. Most images shown in the news (at least 90%) show lebanese side and very little is said about the true reasons of this conflict but mainly of the situation as it is happening in Israel. Can i just remind the blind public opinion that Hezbollah, a state within the state, has started off everything by unilaterally breaking the borders and peace situation by kidpnapping israeli soldiers and shoot missiles over Israel. This is following tones of provocations for years."

I have also found the above picture on Flickr, uploaded by reebA who seems to have an entirely different point of view on how the war started and an animated conversation started on Flicr, about who started the war and wether Israël has over reacted or not.

Vichy blog, le journal de ma peau, the original blog screenshot

VichyThe Vichy case study is the first (and probably european) example of a brand that uses a blog as a pure marketing tool and gets "attacked" by the blogosphere. Shel had written all the details. As I am being asked very often the orginal screenshot of the blog as it was and I'm getting tired of sending it by email, here it is once and for all. The blog Le Journal de ma peau is still online but asleep. L'Oreal had reacted very fast to the criticism, and turned it into a positive experience. Disclosure: I advised L'Oréal when the mini-crisis happened.

One more. What's reassuring is that you're always the young or the old of somebody. [July 14th is the French national day but it's also my birthday :-)]

A few podcasting links

-Geek entertainement acquired by Scoble's podtech via OhmyPod. "and if by moscow you mean kazakhstan and pavlovsk, then yes, i grew up there" sez Irina Slutsky to her new boss, teaching Robert some geography :-)
-Joanne (former MTV...) ' has replaced Amanda at Rocketboom.
-if you can get naked, get naked in a video podcast and you'll make a living. Crazy world.

As many podcast listeners as blog authors sez Nielsen, so what ?

At Bizpodcasting: "Neilsen recently released a survey that says, in part: Nielsen//NetRatings announced today that 6.6 percent of the U.S. adult online population, or 9.2 million Web users, have recently downloaded an audio podcast. 4.0 percent, or 5.6 million Web users, have recently downloaded a video podcast. These figures put the podcasting population on a par with those who publish blogs, 4.8 percent, and online daters, 3.9 percent.

Umm…what? We're comparing podcast listeners with blog writers? That's like comparing newspaper readers to karoake singers. No correlation between the two. I'm embarassed for them." I'm embarassed for Nielsen too... but yeah, it's growing.

20 kilometers of Paris: 9164

20Km1
I have just registered to my first running competition, the 20 km de Paris, on october 15th... I will be n°9164. I am not really looking to do an amazing performance, but rather experience the athmosphere to run with 20 000 people and more than everything it will push me to run regularly until october. Looking forward to other bloggers participating too, maybe we can form a group or train together in Paris.
20KmThe fun part is that there is another Loïc Le Meur who is registered too, I hope I'll meet him there it will be the first "avatar" I meet :-) Oh, and I apologize to all Loïc Le Meurs of this world for the pollution.

About

Welcome to my blog. Based in San Francisco, I am an entrepreneur and a blogger. I just started my fifth startup, Seesmic, a community driven video social software. Here is what TechCrunch says about it.

I am blogging every day a video on loic.tv about (almost) everything I do as I start Seesmic, I also constantly post short thoughts to twitter and often my pictures on Flickr.

I also organize every year in Paris the conference LeWeb3 that gathers more than a thousand bloggers and entrepreneurs from 40 countries on Dec 11 and 12.

If you would like to learn more, here is a bio, my LinkedIn profile, my wikipedia pages in english and french. Sometimes they are subject to changes that do not always reflect what I consider the truth but that is the principle.

You may also want to subscribe to my RSS feeds in English, French or my video podcast feed.
