Stuart on French students in the streets

"In France, however, the prevailing attitude seems to be a quest for security (the fight against 'precariousness' is one of the main rallying cries of the current protests). In part, this is understandable; it's difficult to do anything in this country - get credit, rent a flat - without a permanent contract. But I believe that to be a blinkered view. The answer lies not in providing young people with long-term contracts that are so binding they make employers afraid of hiring anyone new because getting rid of them later if it proves to be the wrong decision, or even simply if the economic climate changes, is prohibitively difficult and expensive. That protects people already in work; it doesn't do much to create new jobs." Link.

Whatever happened to La France Qui Bosse? I remember supporting that organization during the strikes around Raffarin's pensions reform. Seemed the only liberal "street" opposition at the time.

Guys, please, avoid to think with stereotypes brodcasted by your international media and relieved by Loic's blog. All French students are not in the streets ! I am a perfect example of integration thanks to the French Educational System. Both at university and schools (Erasmus program launched in 1987, specific partnerships between schools/university), it is mandatory to do a traineeship abroad, real tendency since 10 to 3 years. Which country has the same system not only reserved to Elite ?

Please, do not make too much generalities !

Matthieu.

About

Welcome to my blog. Based in San Francisco, I am an entrepreneur and a blogger. I just started my fifth startup, Seesmic, a community driven video social software. Here is what TechCrunch says about it.

I am blogging every day a video on loic.tv about (almost) everything I do as I start Seesmic, I also constantly post short thoughts to twitter and often my pictures on Flickr.

I also organize every year in Paris the conference LeWeb3 that gathers more than a thousand bloggers and entrepreneurs from 40 countries on Dec 11 and 12.

If you would like to learn more, here is a bio, my LinkedIn profile, my wikipedia pages in english and french. Sometimes they are subject to changes that do not always reflect what I consider the truth but that is the principle.

You may also want to subscribe to my RSS feeds in English, French or my video podcast feed.
